Description

OPEL LOTUS OMEGA

To the average person, Opel was a dull firm, producing bland, unimaginative cars. It was to put paid to this widely shared belief that the German/American car maker entrusted the British firm Lotus with the unique task of transforming its Omega model, a placid, middle-class saloon, into a surprising and formidable four-seat sports car with a fiery temperament. Only 950 examples of the Opel Lotus Omega were built from 1990–1993 and each car was individually numbered. Lotus started from an Omega powered by Opel’s three-litre 24-valve engine. The car was entirely stripped down and rebuilt to obtain an astounding result. The engine was enlarged to a capacity of 3.6 litres. The original conrods and crankshaft were replaced by specific parts able to handle the 382bhp and 568Nm produced by the twin Garrett turbochargers. The six-speed ZF gearbox was taken from the Corvette ZR1 and modified with a special differential. The structure of the car was strengthened, the chassis lowered and special suspension and shock absorbers fitted. The braking system featured four large-diameter discs with four-piston callipers at the front and twin-piston callipers at the rear, providing stopping power worthy of a Porsche. Special tyres were developed by Goodyear, with a compound able to withstand the heavy loads generated by the car’s high performance. The bodywork was also revised. Only the doors and roof remained original. The bonnet gained a large air intake, the front of the car was completely redesigned, the wheelarches were widened and a spoiler fitted to the boot lid, which proved essential to ensure stability at high speeds. This Omega had little in common with a regular Opel. The extensive changes made utterly transformed the car. Able to reach 285kph (177mph) and cover the standing kilometre in 24.5 seconds, it was now playing in the premier league, hard on the heels of Ferrari and Porsche. With four seats, it taunted the Mercedes 500 E or BMW M5. Only the Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo could rival it. Opel’s bet had paid off. A single colour called ‘Imperial Green’ was chosen for all the cars built. Except for the steering wheel specific to the Lotus version, however, the interior finish remained that of the Omega. The quality of the materials was inferior to those used by Mercedes or BMW. The standard equipment, however, was extensive, including a leather interior, heated electric seats, a sunroof, a radio/CD player and automatic air-conditioning. Technically, the Lotus Omega had no truck with electronic aids: neither ESP nor traction control were fitted. Only ABS and a 45% limited-slip differential were provided to help the driver – who had to become a race-car driver – control the power, which was sent to the rear wheels only. This ‘racing machine’, which went on sale at more than 450,000FF, had a low-key career. Of the 950 cars built, many fell victim to the excessive enthusiasm of their owners and ended up in the ditch. Others were used by criminals, as no police car could attempt to pursue them. In short, very few cars have survived without being repainted or going round the clock several times. To find an attractive original model takes some doing.

The model presented here

The model presented here was delivered new in Luxembourg on 12 February 1992. It was the 411th car built. It has had only two owners and has covered just 39,000km (24,200 miles), making it an exceptional example. The car is entirely original, with no modifications made to it. The paintwork is completely original. A few stone chips are apparent on the front of the car, which has been deliberately left untouched. This could be repainted if the new owner so wished. The car drives perfectly and can be enjoyed just as when it left the factory. It is one of the finest and rarest examples to be found. It is a unique vehicle and a sound purchase. Available from BPM Heritage, it has been serviced and comes with a 12-month warranty.
