Peugeot 504 Coupé
The Peugeot 504 was a real success commercially. With nearly four million cars built from 1968 – 1983, it was sold as a saloon, estate, coupé, convertible and pick-up. It competed in numerous rallies and was the travelling companion of many high-mileage users, including taxi drivers and sales reps, who appreciated its comfort, reliability and solid build.
The 504 coupé was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1969. Styled by the designer and coachbuilder Pininfarina, it was also built in Pininfarina’s workshops near Turin. It was then dispatched by train to Sochaux, where the engine, transmission and suspension were assembled. Unlike the body, its engine was carried over from the saloon. When it was launched, it was fitted with the 1.8-litre unit with Kugelfischer fuel injection producing 97bhp (DIN). It had independent suspension all round and solid disc brakes at front and rear. The only transmission available was a four-speed manual. At the end of 1970, the engine capacity was increased to 2 litres, with power rising to 104bhp. Apart from this gain in power, which allowed the car to reach a top speed of 179kph (111mph), a 10% increase in torque offered a welcome improvement in flexibility. The coupé’s structure was also carried over from the saloon, but with the wheelbase shortened from 2.74m (108.7in) to 2.55m (100.4in). Behind the wheel, it was as good to drive as the four-door version. The car was extremely comfortable and stable, with good roadholding and powerful brakes. Without claiming to be a sports car, the coupé could boast performance which was more than respectable for its time. But it was above all its styling which created an impression. The first versions, with dual headlamps and ‘small’ taillights, are probably the most sought after. Subsequently, changes were made in 1974 and 1980: six-cylinder engines were offered and modifications made to the car’s design. The car left its mark on its period. It was used and shown off in various films and television series including Nestor Burma, where – in convertible form – it became an undisputed star. In 1983, production of the model came to an end. It would only be replaced in 1997, by the 406 coupé. The manufacturing processes used at the time did not offer effective protection against corrosion and the ravages of time. It is therefore difficult to find an example today among the 31,163 cars built which remains in good original condition.
The model presented here
The model we are offering is a rare gem. It is one of the 5848 first-series coupés built with a manual gearbox. It was delivered new in 1971 to a Peugeot employee who lived in Haute-Savoie. He was its sole owner, as can be seen from the original registration certificate, which we have kept. The car is in astonishing condition, having been perfectly looked after and covered a very low mileage. The original white paintwork has kept its shine, while the brown velour interior remains as soft as ever.
There is not the slightest sign of corrosion and everything is original! It is as if the car had been put in a glass case, unaffected by the passage of time. Inside the car, you are taken back fifty years. Even the characteristic smells are still there. The plastic trim, cloth and glass are like new. Its performance matches its exceptional condition. Everything is perfect. The engine pulls as strongly as it did back in the day. The car has been serviced, enabling the new owner to enjoy this handsome coupé as they please. But more than this, this coupé is a rare collector’s item, probably one of the finest surviving models, an original, one-owner car which has covered only 29,000km (18,000 miles). It will delight a demanding Peugeot enthusiast and will naturally find its place in a collection of exceptional cars.
