MERCEDES 450 SEL 6.9
Until 1972, the S series was represented by the W108 and W109 ranges. The 300 SEL 6.3 was the top-of-the-range model in this series. Its powerful 250 hp V8, coupled with a four-speed automatic gearbox, gave it outstanding performance for its time. Its air suspension and luxurious finish ensured that passengers travelled comfortably in a plush atmosphere. 1972 saw the introduction of the new S-Class, the W116. Aesthetically, it contrasted with its predecessor with more angular forms. Its new running gear made it more efficient on asphalt. This sedan was almost perfect. The successor to the 6.3 had to wait before being marketed. The 1973 oil crisis was the reason. Presented in March 1974 at the Geneva Motor Show, it was not available for sale until 1975. The manufacturer preferred to wait until the situation had calmed down. This car was aimed at customers affected by the crisis, who also needed time to rebuild their financial resources. Mercedes’ flagship model, the 450 SEL 6.9, was sold at a premium. It seemed deserved, since in 1975 it was voted by the press as the best car in the world.
Its lines were imposing, and the chrome highlights the car’s beauty without making it ostentatious. Although it looked wise and bourgeois, its mechanics transformed it into a ferocious beast. The press of the time described it as a “sedan with Porsche performance”. The engine compartment housed an imposing 6.9, which was none other than the 6.3 of its predecessor, but a little bigger. Powered by mechanical fuel injection, it produced 286 bhp and a gigantic 594 Nm of torque that made you forget about the ratings. Its smoothness and power delivered top-flight performance. 100 kph was achieved in 7.4 s, and the official top speed exceeded 225 kph. Journalists clocked it at 235 km/h! Overtaking was a mere formality. Thanks to its hydropneumatic suspension, the car’s attitude was maintained in all circumstances. The car didn’t pitch up under acceleration or dive under braking. These elements ensured optimum comfort and impressive roadholding for this almost two-ton machine. The finish was exemplary. Everything had been thought out to ensure that this marriage of luxury and efficiency would be a success. And it was. All controls were coherent. Comfort, silence and overall performance lived up to the prestige promised by the manufacturer. The equipment was sober but complete. A smooth automatic gearbox, cruise control, air conditioning, four electric windows and central locking were standard features. The seats were upholstered in a choice of soft velvet or high-quality leather. This car was probably one of the most beautiful and efficient sedans in the world. It was highly prized by busy businessmen, racing drivers and showbiz stars. Claude François owned one of the first. After the assassination attempt on his life on June 25, 1977, he recounted how the 6.9 he drove himself, thanks to its power and driving qualities, saved his life by enabling him to escape from the ambush. In August 1976, filmmaker Claude Lelouch crossed Paris, from the bottom of Avenue Foch to Montmartre, peaking at over 200 km/h at the wheel of a 6.9, camera mounted on the front bumper. Only this car could shoot at such high speeds, while keeping the camera stable thanks to its hydraulic suspension. During editing, a raucous Ferrari mechanical noise was added to the soundtrack to spice up the scene. All to honor a date… Times have changed…
A total of 7,380 6.9s were produced worldwide, all of them extremely reliable and robust. Many, pushed to the limit by unscrupulous owners, are no longer with us. Rust has also nibbled away at the underside of some. Others have covered unmentionable mileage. These days, you don’t often get the chance to look back at a beautiful original that hasn’t been driven much.
The model presented
The model presented here was delivered in Germany in 1976. It was ordered in gray livery with a blue velvet interior. This color combination was a classic at the time. The odometer reading of 135,000 kilometers is not verifiable and therefore not guaranteed. On the other hand, the car has been perfectly maintained and runs wonderfully. Suspension, tires and brakes are all new. This allows the car to be used in the best possible conditions. Its general condition and appearance are very good. There aren’t many 6.9s on the market any more, which are sound and don’t require any particular expense. This is the case with this model, which, at a very affordable price, will delight the enthusiast. It comes with a 12-month warranty.
