Peugeot 504 GL 1969.
The Peugeot 504 was a commercial success. Almost four million units were produced between 1968 and 1983, in saloon, estate, coupé, cabriolet and pick-up versions. It took part in numerous rallies, and was the road companion of many heavy-duty drivers such as cabs and sales representatives, who appreciated its comfort, reliability and robustness.
The 504 sedan, originally scheduled for launch in June 1968, was not released until September, due to the events of May. It was assembled at Sochaux. At the time of its launch, it was powered by a 1.8-liter, 82 hp carburetor or “Kugelfischer”-type injection pump, developing 97 hp Din. It was the brand’s first sedan with four independent wheels and four solid disc brakes. At the end of 1970, the engine’s displacement was increased to 2.0 liters, giving 93 bhp for the carbureted version and 104 bhp for the fuel-injected version. In addition to this gain in power, which enabled a top speed of 172 km/h, a 10% increase in torque provided appreciably greater operating flexibility. At the wheel, the atmosphere was pleasant. The car was very comfortable, spacious and stable, with good roadholding and effective braking. Without claiming to be sporty, this sedan could boast more than respectable performance for its time.
Its qualities made it a great success with long-distance drivers and families, who appreciated its comfort and generous volume (450 dm2 trunk). Every one of us has a nostalgic image of a 504. It was also very much in evidence on the silver screen. In Claude Zidi’s film “L’aile ou la cuisse”, for example, the 504 is driven by a Tricatel henchman in pursuit of Louis de Funès’ Mercedes limousine, in an atmosphere of skids and incredible stunts. So successful was the 504 that it continued to be produced as a saloon until 1983, by which time its successor, the 505, which retained the same platform, had been out for four years. It was even built in Argentina, Kenya and Nigeria as a station wagon and pick-up until 2005. Its solidity is no legend. Many of them are still being driven in Africa on a daily basis. The manufacturing techniques of the time did not allow for effective protection against rust and other ravages of time. As a result, it’s hard to find an example in perfect original condition with low mileage.
The model presented.
This model is one of the first to be produced, with the steering wheel of the first series. It was registered on April 2, 1969. It is a GL model, equipped with a 1.8 carburetor engine, four independent wheels, automatic gearbox, sunroof and leather interior. This car has covered just 69,000 kilometers. After a long downtime, it was restarted and overhauled to get back on the road. The mechanics were rebuilt and new paint applied to the bodywork. However, the car’s sound condition required no restoration. Overall, it remains original, with no corrosion. The engine bay, trunk floors and underbody are original and in excellent condition. Its overall operation is excellent, and it’s a pleasure to drive. This is an opportunity to acquire one of the first versions, in original quality, with low mileage, serviced and guaranteed for 12 months.
