Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.6
The Mercedes 190, codenamed the W201, was presented to the press in November 1982. It was a major innovation. Its more compact dimensions compared with Mercedes’ other models earned it the nickname of the ‘Baby Benz’. Mercedes’ aim was to compete with the 3 Series produced by its Bavarian rival BMW. Despite its ‘compact’ size, the car was comfortable and spacious (in the front, at least). Its multi-link rear suspension and excellent chassis gave it outstanding roadholding, well-balanced handling and a comfortable ride. Initially powered by four-cylinder petrol engines with carburettors or fuel injection, it was subsequently offered with 2.0 and 2.5-litre diesel engines, as well as a big 2.3-litre ‘four’ and a 2.6-litre six-cylinder. Disparaged when it was launched, its critics had to face the facts: the 190 was a proper Mercedes. It possessed the same qualities of solid construction, reliability and comfort as its predecessors, but with more dynamic handling. At the end of 1988, the second series was introduced, with different bumpers, lower door panels and ABS as standard. In 1984, a sporty model known as the 2.3-16 was launched, with an engine prepared by Cosworth. This version developed into the 2.5-16 model and Evo I and Evo II versions with large spoilers and side skirts that accentuated its sporting appearance. It competed in many motorsport events.
The 190 was a commercial success. More than 1.8 million cars were built during its career, which ran until 1993. It was replaced by the W202, the C-Class, which is still part of Mercedes’ range. Although the 190 was widely sold, it is difficult today to find an example with low mileage and in excellent condition.
The model presented here
The model presented here was delivered new in Germany on 20 November 1988. It is therefore a second-generation model, with the revised interior, side cladding panels and ABS as standard. Its 2.6-litre six-cylinder engine was taken from the S-Class of the period. Producing 166bhp, it delivers excellent performance in considerable comfort and is surprisingly quiet. This engine transforms the 190 and changes the driving experience. Various options such as air conditioning, an electric sunroof, automatic transmission and velour upholstery add to the interest of this model. This 190 E 2.6 drives perfectly. It has always been maintained and no modifications have been made to the car. The paintwork is for the most part original and is immaculate, as is the rest of the car. There are few 190 E 2.6 models left on the market. This one is perfect and well equipped. It has covered only 77,000km, making it a rare example. It will be prepared for sale and guaranteed for 12 months.
